Bible Reading: Genesis 1: 1 – 5
Memory Verse: Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
Devo:
How do you feel about the dark? When I was little, I was afraid of our basement. If I had to go down at night, I would run out so fast I could have broken records.
Before the world began, there was only God. The Bible tells us that the world was dark, shapeless and lifeless. The first thing God said was “Let there be light.”
Instantly, the dark universe was lit up. It was still lifeless and shapeless but a change had begun. It was like God turned on the light to clean the messy basement. God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” God saw that it was good.
The next day, God began to bring order. He separated the waters and created the sky. Evening came and that finished the second day.
On the third day, God separated the waters below the sky from the dry ground, making the land and the seas.
Then God commanded the earth to produce plants and trees and grass. The dry ground was filled with life for the first time. The gray, brown earth was now covered with beautiful green leaves, flowers and fruit.
Reading about God creating the world, reminds me of how he creates us.
Because of Jesus, we are new creations. When God deals with our sin, He first brings light. We don’t always like it when he shines the light in our heart. But it’s the first important step.
As we confess our sin, and we follow Him, God will remove the darkness. He teaches us new ways to think and live. We begin to see the fruit of Jesus in our lives.
How About You?
How do you feel when you see sin in your life?
Why do some people make excuses for darkness in their lives?
Prayer:
Thank you Heavenly Father for your light. Give me courage to let you shine your light in my heart so we can clean up the mess of sin. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.
